Indian architecture career — what to know before choosing this path
5-year degree path
B.Arch is a 5-year professional degree (not 4 years like engineering). After graduation, 2 years of internship are required to get the COA Architect registration number legally required to practise. Factor in 7 years total before independent practice begins.
Infrastructure boom context
India's infrastructure push — smart cities, metro rail, PMAY affordable housing, 100 new airports, green building mandates — creates 25-year sustained demand for architects. The 2020s are arguably the best decade to enter Indian architecture since independence.
Salary trajectory
Starting salaries (Rs 3–6 LPA) are lower than engineering but the senior trajectory is strong. Principal architects at top firms earn Rs 30–80 LPA. Own practice has unlimited upside. Architecture rewards long-term commitment — 10-year architects earn 5–10x their fresher salary.
Prepare with a mentor who has cleared JEE Paper 2 or NATA
Architecture entrance preparation requires balancing JEE-level mathematics with consistent drawing practice — a combination most students struggle to maintain alone. A mentor who has navigated this can help you structure your 6-month plan, evaluate your drawing quality, and guide aptitude study for architecture GK.
