ESE vs GATE vs IAS — choosing the right path
ESE (IES)
Central Government technical service. Pay Level 10 at entry. Technical specialist who also becomes an administrator. The hardest engineering exam in India — UPSC conducted with 3 stages including interview. ~215 vacancies across 4 branches. Best for engineers who want government service with technical content.
GATE
Not a government job directly — it's a qualifier for PSU jobs (NTPC, ONGC, BHEL) and higher studies (IIT/NIT MTech). PSU jobs via GATE offer Pay Level 7–10 with competitive selection. Easier than ESE but less prestigious. GATE prep is essential groundwork for ESE Prelims Paper 2.
UPSC IAS
Generalist administrator — same Pay Level 10 start as ESE, faster promotions, far more administrative power. IAS is humanities-centric. Engineers who prefer policy, administration, and public governance over technical work should consider UPSC Civil Services with optional subjects like Mathematics or Engineering.

3-stage selection — what each stage tests
Prelims (500 marks)
Objective exam in February. Paper 1 = GS + Aptitude (200 marks). Paper 2 = Branch technical (300 marks). Negative marking (-1/3). Shortlists for Mains.
Mains (600 marks)
Descriptive exam in June. Two 3-hour papers of branch technical content (300 marks each). Answer quality — diagrams, derivations, step-by-step — matters as much as technical knowledge.
Interview (200 marks)
UPSC Personality Test. Technical depth + service orientation + current affairs. Final merit = Stage 1 + 2 + Interview (1300 marks total).
