GATE CS
Computer Science & Information Technology
GATE CS is among the most competitive branches with 1.5 lakh+ candidates per year. A score of 700+ unlocks IIT/IISc MTech admissions and top PSU roles at BEL, BSNL, and BARC. CS has the highest overlap with software engineering concepts — making it one of the few GATE papers where industry experience actively helps preparation.

GATE EC
Electronics & Communication Engineering
GATE EC (Electronics & Communication) is the gateway to IIT/IISc MTech in VLSI, signal processing, and communication systems. Top PSU recruiters include ISRO, BARC, DRDO, BEL, and BSNL. EC has one of the most rigorous mathematical syllabi in GATE — strong fundamentals in signals, networks, and electromagnetics are non-negotiable for a 700+ score.

GATE ME
Mechanical Engineering
GATE ME is one of the largest GATE papers with 1 lakh+ candidates competing for MTech seats at IITs/NITs and PSU positions at NTPC, BHEL, ONGC, GAIL, Indian Oil, and Coal India. The syllabus spans thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, manufacturing, mechanics of materials, and industrial engineering — requiring both conceptual depth and numerical calculation speed.

What GATE actually opens
IIT/IISc MTech admissions
A GATE score of 700+ is the primary criterion for MTech admissions at IITs. Most departments use GATE for shortlisting, followed by a written test and/or interview. GATE score validity is 3 years.
PSU direct recruitment
NTPC, BHEL, ONGC, ISRO, BARC, BEL, GAIL, Indian Oil — all recruit directly via GATE score. PSU cutoffs vary by year and branch. Multiple PSUs can be applied to with the same GATE score.
Research fellowships
A GATE score is required for Junior Research Fellow (JRF) positions and PhD admissions at IISc, IITs, and NITs. CSIR and DST also accept GATE scores for project associate positions.

NAT (Numerical Answer Type) questions have no negative marking — never leave them blank. MCQ questions with wrong answers lose 1/3 or 2/3 mark.
