Question type strategy

JEE Advanced uses 5 different question types with different marking schemes. Each requires a different tactical approach.

Single Correct MCQ

Eliminate options, not just solve forward. Two wrong options are usually obvious — use this to narrow down without full calculation.

Multiple Correct MCQ

Partial marks awarded for partially correct selection (no penalty for partial). Mark options you are certain about first — add uncertain ones only if you are 75%+ confident.

Integer Type (0–9)

Always attempt. No negative marking means zero downside. If calculation gets complex, estimate the order of magnitude — integer answers are never arbitrary.

Paragraph / Passage-based

Read the passage twice before answering any question. The passage usually provides data that makes all 3–4 linked questions solvable without full derivations.

Match the Column

Solve the column with fewer unknowns first. A correct match in one column constrains the other — reduces the full problem to 2–3 choices.

What rank is needed in JEE Main to qualify for JEE Advanced?

The top 2.5 lakh candidates from JEE Main (Category-wise: ~1.78 lakh general, rest from SC/ST/OBC/PwD) are eligible for JEE Advanced. The exact cutoff rank varies by year — typically around 90+ percentile in JEE Main.

Is JEE Advanced harder than JEE Main?

Significantly harder. JEE Main tests conceptual understanding up to NCERT+extensions. JEE Advanced tests deep derivations, multi-step reasoning, and non-textbook applications. A student scoring 99 percentile in JEE Main may struggle to cross cutoff in JEE Advanced without dedicated Advanced-specific preparation.

How many attempts does a student get for JEE Advanced?

Exactly 2 attempts, and they must be in consecutive years. A student who appeared in JEE Advanced 2024 can attempt 2025 but not 2026. This is a hard limit — no exceptions for medical reasons.

Should I prepare for JEE Main and Advanced simultaneously?

Yes, but with different layers. Prepare the JEE Main syllabus fully first (NCERT mastery). JEE Advanced preparation is an additional depth layer on top — same chapters, deeper derivations, non-standard problem types. Students who skip JEE Main-level foundation for Advanced-level problems typically underperform in both.

Which subject should I focus on most for JEE Advanced?

Chemistry is the most scoring and rewards consistent effort over raw aptitude. Target 50–55 marks in Chemistry to create a buffer for Physics and Mathematics. Physics rewards intuition and visualisation. Mathematics at IIT level is the hardest — allocate the most preparation hours but do not neglect Chemistry.
