IIM
India's most prestigious MBA entrance exam — gateway to all 20 IIMs, FMS Delhi, MDI Gurgaon, SPJIMR, IIFT, and 500+ other B-schools. CAT tests Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Aptitude (QA). A 99+ percentile is required for IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, or Calcutta calls.

GMAT Focus Edition
GMAC
The global standard for MBA admission — accepted by 7,700+ programs in 110 countries including Harvard, Wharton, INSEAD, London Business School, and all top US/European MBA programs. The 2023 GMAT Focus Edition is shorter (2h15m), computer-adaptive by section, and removed the essay — making it more directly comparable to GRE and requiring a new strategy.

CAT vs GMAT — which do you need?
Take CAT if targeting...
- IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta
- FMS Delhi or MDI Gurgaon
- Any of 500+ Indian B-schools
- 2-year MBA in India under ₹30 lakh
Take GMAT if targeting...
- Harvard, Wharton, Stanford GSB, INSEAD
- ISB Hyderabad (PGP program)
- London Business School or top European MBA
- 1-year international MBA programs
Many candidates prepare for both simultaneously — core Quant and Verbal skills overlap significantly. GMAT has unique Data Sufficiency and Data Insights that require separate preparation.
Why MBA preparation is different from engineering entrance
It is a selection process, not an exam
A 99%ile CAT score only opens the call stage. GD/PI rounds, essays, and work experience determine final admits. The exam is the first gate, not the only one.
Mock analysis > mock practice
The candidate who analyses every mock for 2 hours improves faster than the one who takes 3 mocks per week without review. Error categorisation is the leverage point.
Timing and selection strategy are learnable
Knowing which DILR set to skip or which QA questions to leave is a practised skill, not an instinct. It requires learning your own question-type speed under exam pressure.
