GATE CS Mock Test Strategy

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (Computer Science)

GATE CS mock tests cover 65 questions in 3 hours: 10 General Aptitude questions (15 marks) and 55 CS questions (85 marks). Unlike JEE/NEET, GATE has no fixed syllabus proportion per subject — the distribution varies. Full-length mocks build the subject-switching agility GATE demands.

Phase-by-Phase Mock Schedule

Phase 1 — Subject-wise Mocks

After completing each subject

One 25–30 question test per subject

Focus: Subject accuracy

After completing a GATE subject, take a 30-question subject-wise mock immediately. GATE has high conceptual variance — immediate testing after study locks retention better than revision.

Phase 2 — Mixed-Subject Sectionals

2 months before exam

2 sectionals per week

Focus: Cross-subject reasoning

GATE questions often combine 2 subjects — a question on OS scheduling may require Discrete Math reasoning. Mixed sectionals expose this cross-subject requirement that single-subject tests miss.

Phase 3 — Full GATE Mocks

Final 6 weeks

3 full mocks per week

Focus: Complete simulation with review

Full 3-hour mocks. Track your GA score separately — 10 marks you should score near-perfectly. Review every NAT question regardless of whether you got it right: show the arithmetic.

Post-Mock Analysis Checklist

  • GA score: should be 12–15 out of 15 consistently — if below 10, dedicate 1 week to GA-only practice
  • Subject breakdown: which CS subjects are your strongest and weakest?
  • NAT accuracy: how many numerical questions did you get exactly right?
  • Negative marks total: sum up all –1/3 and –2/3 deductions
  • 1-mark vs 2-mark split: your accuracy on each — most students do worse on 2-mark questions
  • Unattempted count: GATE rewards selective omission — blank is often better than –2/3
  • Time per question: average time on 1-mark vs 2-mark questions

Common Mock Test Mistakes

Treating GATE like JEE — attempting everything

Impact: Careless errors on 2-mark questions cost 2/3 more than value gained

Target 85%+ accuracy on attempted questions — selective omission is a GATE strategy

Neglecting General Aptitude in mocks

Impact: 15 free marks become 8–10 — a 5-6 rank drop in a normalized exam

Practise GA daily for 20 minutes in the 2 months before exam

Never solving NAT questions in practice (only MCQs)

Impact: NAT questions have no negative marking — ignoring them leaves guaranteed marks on the table

Solve every NAT in every mock, check arithmetic, note where you were off by a digit

Using only 1 mock platform

Impact: Different platforms test different question styles — one platform creates a local optimum

Use 2–3 platforms (MADE Easy, TestBook, GATE official test series)
