Occupational Therapy Entrance Exam Guides

India has approximately 200+ BOT programmes with 5,000–8,000 seats — from AIIMS's highly competitive Allied Health Sciences entrance (30 BOT seats) to state government colleges and WFOT-approved private institutions. OT addresses one of the largest unmet needs in Indian healthcare: only ~30,000 practising OTs serve a 1.4 billion population against WHO's recommended 30 OTs per 100,000 people. The RPWD Act 2016 mandates OT services at district level, creating systematic government employment alongside expanding corporate hospital rehabilitation departments and international migration opportunities to the UK, Australia, and Canada.

Three forces expanding OT demand in India

Disability legislation mandate

The RPWD Act 2016 (Rights of Persons with Disabilities) mandates rehabilitation services — including OT — at district hospitals across India. 741 districts × OT positions creates a government employment base that barely existed before 2016. National Trust and NIMH schemes further fund community OT posts. RCI-registered BOT graduates are the first to fill these mandated positions — a government-created demand floor that grows with implementation.

Autism and developmental disability surge

India's estimated 18 million autistic individuals and 3+ crore people with cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, and developmental delay represent a massive and underserved OT market. Urban private paediatric OT clinics — the highest-earning OT practice format — report 3–6 month waiting lists. Sensory Integration (SI) certification adds Rs 30,000–50,000/month to a paediatric OT's income. Awareness of early intervention is rising sharply in educated urban families, driving session volumes and willingness to pay premium rates.

Ageing population and stroke rehabilitation

India's population aged 60+ will reach 320 million by 2050 — driving exponential demand for geriatric OT, stroke rehabilitation, and Alzheimer's/dementia ADL support. Post-COVID neurological complications (long COVID cognitive impairment, fatigue) created a new OT patient cohort. Corporate hospitals building dedicated neuro-rehabilitation wings (Apollo Neuro Centre, Fortis RehabFirst) are hiring senior OT with MoT qualifications at Rs 1.5–2.5 lakh/month — one of the fastest salary growth tracks in allied health.

Prepare with a mentor who has cleared AIIMS Allied Health or a state BOT entrance and practises occupational therapy

OT entrance preparation requires understanding the Allied Health Aptitude component — clinical reasoning scenarios and OT awareness questions that pure PCB preparation doesn't cover. A mentor who has cleared the AIIMS BOT or state CET and works in OT knows exactly what the Allied Health Aptitude section tests and how to prepare for it alongside Biology, Physics, and Chemistry.
