Banking Exam Preparation Guides

From IBPS PO (15+ lakh applicants) to RBI Grade B (India's apex banking career) — each exam demands a different depth of preparation and a different strategy.

Which banking exam should you target first?

IBPS PO

Best starting point. 11 public sector banks, 4,000–6,000 vacancies. Prelims + Mains + Interview. The benchmark for all banking preparation — if you can clear IBPS Mains, you can attempt all other banking exams in the same cycle.

SBI PO

More competitive (25 lakh applicants, 2,000 vacancies) but better pay and career growth. Adds a Group Exercise stage and Descriptive Paper. Prepare IBPS first, then use that base to target SBI with additional prep.

RBI Grade B

India's most prestigious banking exam. Economics and finance depth at postgraduate level. Only 200–300 vacancies. Aim for this after IBPS/SBI success or as a primary target with 8–12 months of dedicated preparation.

The common core — what all three exams share

Negative marking is a strategy question

All three exams deduct 0.25 per wrong answer. The optimal strategy is not maximum attempts — it is maximum accuracy on attempted questions. Candidates who skip genuinely uncertain questions consistently outscore those who attempt everything.

Sectional cutoffs are eliminatory

IBPS PO and SBI PO have sectional cutoffs at both Prelims and Mains. Scoring 180/200 overall but failing one section means elimination. Many technically strong candidates fail because they neglect English or General Awareness.

Banking awareness is the differentiator

In any competitive banking exam, most candidates are similar on Aptitude and Reasoning. Banking Awareness is where prepared candidates separate themselves — 15–20 days of focused static banking study can add 20+ marks above competitors.

Mock test analysis beats mock test volume

Candidates who take 50 mocks without reviewing them plateau. Candidates who take 20 mocks and spend equal time analysing each error — tracking error patterns by topic and question type — outperform them consistently.

Prepare for banking exams with a mentor who has qualified them

Speed building, sectional strategy, and banking awareness are fastest to learn from someone who has already cracked IBPS or SBI — a mentor can show you exactly which question types to prioritise and which to skip under time pressure.
