CAT Reading Comprehension: The 99-Percentiler Strategy
CAT VARC is the most feared section. This is the exact RC approach used by 99+ percentilers to answer 24 questions with 90%+ accuracy in 40 minutes.
VARC (Verbal Ability + Reading Comprehension) in CAT has become the defining section over the last five years. Quant toppers can no longer afford to treat VARC as an afterthought. The RC passages are dense, academic, and deliberately ambiguous โ and you have roughly 8 minutes per passage to read it and answer 4โ5 questions.
The 2-Minute Passive Read (Don't Do This)
Most aspirants read the passage superficially โ scanning for keywords โ and then struggle with questions because they don't understand the author's argument. This is the root cause of low RC scores. The 99th percentile approach is counterintuitive: read the passage more carefully in the first pass, and answer questions faster as a result.
The Active Reading Framework (3-Point System)
For every RC passage, identify three things as you read: (1) the author's central claim or thesis, (2) the evidence or examples used to support it, and (3) any counterarguments the author acknowledges and dismisses. 80% of CAT RC questions target exactly these three elements โ Main Idea, Evidence-Based Inference, and Author's Attitude questions.
- Main Idea questions: your 3-point framework gives you the answer directly
- Inference questions: the correct answer follows logically from the text โ it doesn't add information not present in the passage
- Author's attitude questions: look for evaluative language (critiques, endorses, cautions, argues)
- Vocabulary-in-context questions: substitute each option into the sentence and choose the one that preserves meaning
Passage Selection: The 90-Second Rule
CAT VARC typically has 4 RC passages. You must attempt all 4 โ but you don't have to start with the first one. Spend 90 seconds reading the first paragraph of each passage to gauge difficulty and familiarity. Attempt the two easiest passages first to secure 8โ10 guaranteed correct answers, then tackle the harder ones.
Never spend more than 12 minutes on a single passage. If you're stuck on a question after 90 seconds, mark it for review and move on. One difficult question can derail your entire VARC attempt.
Building RC Speed: The 90-Day Practice Protocol
CAT RC speed is built over months, not weeks. The most effective practice: read one long-form article from The Atlantic, The Economist, or Aeon every day (25โ30 minutes), then summarise the author's main argument in 3 sentences. Do this without pressure or a timer. The speed comes naturally as comprehension deepens.
- 1Days 1โ30: Read for comprehension only. No timing. Build the habit.
- 2Days 31โ60: Add light timing. Target 6 minutes per passage.
- 3Days 61โ90: Full mock conditions. 4 passages in 40 minutes with analysis.
Para-Jumbles and Para-Summary: The Quick Wins
Para-Jumbles and Para-Summary are the most trainable question types in VARC. Unlike RC, they have clear logical rules: look for the opening sentence (introduces topic, no pronoun references), the closing sentence (gives a conclusion or implication), and link pairs (A must come before B because B references something in A). 4 hours of focused Para-Jumble practice typically yields a 2โ3 question improvement.
