Other Requirements

Candidates can appear in maximum 2 GATE papers in the same session (only specific allowed combinations).
The GATE score is valid for 3 years from the date of announcement for admissions and PSU applications.
PSUs using GATE have their own cut-off scores and additional eligibility (branch, percentage, etc.) — check individual PSU notifications.
For Ph.D. admission, GATE is required by most IITs/NITs but some institutions have their own criteria.
Candidates must select their qualifying discipline — the paper attempted must match their degree discipline.

Common Misconceptions — Busted

Myth: Pre-final year students can appear for GATE

Fact: Only final-year students and those who have already completed their degree are eligible. Pre-final year (penultimate year) students are NOT eligible.

Myth: GATE score is valid for 5 years

Fact: GATE score is valid for exactly 3 years from the date of result declaration. After 3 years, you must reappear.

Myth: You need 60% in BE/BTech to appear for GATE

Fact: There is no minimum percentage requirement for appearing in GATE. However, IITs/NITs set their own cut-offs for M.Tech admissions (typically 60-65%).

Myth: GATE is only for IIT/NIT admissions

Fact: GATE scores are used by 200+ PSUs (BHEL, ONGC, IOCL, GAIL, etc.) for direct recruitment and by NITs, IITs, IISc, IIITs, and private institutes for M.Tech admissions.

Recent Rule Changes

2021

Two new papers added: Environmental Science and Engineering (ES), Humanities and Social Sciences (XH).

Frequently Asked Questions

I am in my 3rd year of B.Tech. Can I appear for GATE?

No. Only final-year students (4th year of B.Tech) and those who have already graduated are eligible. 3rd-year (pre-final year) students cannot appear.

Can I appear for GATE with a B.Sc. degree?

Yes, if you have a B.Sc. (Research) / B.S. degree of at least 4 years, or an M.Sc. in a relevant discipline. A regular 3-year B.Sc. alone is generally not sufficient — check the specific paper qualification requirements.

My GATE 2022 score — can I use it for PSU recruitment in 2025?

GATE scores are valid for 3 years. A 2022 GATE score expired in 2025 (after the 2025 admission/recruitment cycle begins). For 2026 placements, you would need a 2023 or later score.

Is there any age limit for PSU recruitment through GATE?

Most PSUs have their own age limits (typically 26-28 years for General, higher for reserved categories). GATE itself has no age limit, but the PSU you're applying to does — check each PSU's official notification.
