JEE Main is the gateway to NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs. Understanding eligibility is the first step — there is no age cap, but the 12th-class year and attempt count rules catch many candidates off guard.

Qualification Requirements
10+2 (Class 12)
Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects + any one of Chemistry / Biology / Biotechnology / Technical Vocational Subject
Marks: No minimum marks required for JEE Main. NIT/IIIT admission requires 75% aggregate (65% for SC/ST) or top 20 percentile in board.
Candidates appearing in Class 12 in the exam year are also eligible.
Diploma holders
Not eligible for Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech). Eligible for Paper 2B (B.Planning) if diploma is in Architecture/Planning.
Diploma holders can appear in JEE Advanced if qualified via JEE Main Paper 1.

Common Misconceptions — Busted
Myth: There is an age limit of 25 years for JEE Main
Fact: The age limit was completely removed in 2017. Any candidate who meets the Class 12 eligibility and attempt criteria can appear regardless of age.
Myth: Scoring 75% in JEE Main guarantees NIT admission
Fact: 75% refers to your Class 12 board marks, not JEE Main score. You need both a good JEE Main rank AND 75% boards for NIT/IIIT admission.
Myth: You can drop two years and still get 6 attempts
Fact: The 6 attempts must be within 3 consecutive years starting from the year you appear for Class 12. A 2-year gap resets nothing — you only have the year you pass and the next two years.
Myth: Biology students cannot appear for JEE Main
Fact: Students with Physics + Mathematics + Biology in Class 12 are fully eligible. Chemistry or Biology in the 3rd subject slot both qualify.
Recent Rule Changes
NTA introduced two sessions per year (January and April), giving candidates two shots per year.
Class 12 marks removed from JEE Main rank calculation; rank now based solely on JEE Main score.
Age limit of 25 years (27 for reserved categories) completely removed by MHRD.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I appear for JEE Main if I passed Class 12 in 2023?
No. For the 2025 session, only candidates who passed Class 12 in 2024 or are appearing in 2025 are eligible. The 3-year window closed for 2023 passouts after the 2025 attempt.
If I appeared in 2024 January and April, and 2025 January and April — how many attempts are left?
If you passed Class 12 in 2024, you started your 3-year window. That gives you 2024 (Jan+Apr), 2025 (Jan+Apr), and 2026 (Jan+Apr) — 6 total. After 2025 sessions, you have 2 more attempts in 2026.
Is the 75% board marks criterion waived for COVID years?
The COVID waiver applied for 2021 and 2022 admissions. For 2025 onwards, the 75% criterion is fully reinstated. Check the official JoSAA/CSAB brochure each year for any new waivers.
Can an NRI appear for JEE Main?
Yes — Indian nationals studying abroad and OCI/PIO cardholders can appear. Foreign nationals can also appear but compete for supernumerary seats at NITs, not the main quota.
