Common mistakes and fixes
✗ Spending too long on one Reading question
Fix: Cap each question at 90 seconds — if stuck, guess and move on; never miss 5 questions trying to perfect 1.
✗ Writing Task 2 without a clear position
Fix: State your opinion clearly in the introduction and return to it in the conclusion — "discuss both views" essays that do not take a stand score poorly on Task Response.
✗ Using overly formal/complex vocabulary incorrectly
Fix: Band 7 rewards accuracy over complexity. Use words you are confident with; a wrong high-level word penalises more than a correct simple one.
✗ Speaking too slowly to "think" in Part 2
Fix: Use fillers naturally ("Well, I suppose that...", "That's an interesting one...") to keep speech flowing while thinking.
Frequently asked questions
IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training — which one do I need?
IELTS Academic is required for undergraduate and postgraduate university admissions, and for professional registration (medicine, nursing). IELTS General Training is for skilled migration (Australia PR, Canada PR, UK Skilled Worker visa) and vocational training. Check your specific university or visa application for which is accepted.
Can I retake just one section of IELTS?
Yes — IELTS One Skill Retake allows you to retake any one section (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) within 60 days of your original test, if you took IELTS on computer. Paper-based IELTS does not offer this option. The cost is approximately 25% of the full test fee.
How many times can I take IELTS?
There is no limit — you can take IELTS as many times as needed. Most test centres offer the exam multiple times per month. Most institutions accept your best score from any sitting, but some require it to be from a single sitting — verify with your specific institution.
Is Band 7 in IELTS hard to achieve?
Band 7 requires consistent competence across all four skills. The Writing section is most commonly the bottleneck — it has strict marking criteria around Task Response, Coherence, Lexical Resource, and Grammar. Most candidates with a solid foundation achieve Band 7 in 8–12 weeks of structured preparation.
