Defence Exam Preparation Guides

NDA for Class 12 students and CDS for graduates — both require written exam strategy, SSB interview preparation, and physical fitness developed months in advance.

NDA vs CDS — which path suits you?

🎖️ NDA (National Defence Academy)

Class 12 students or passouts aged 16.5–19.5. The direct, full-career officer route. Candidates join NDA at 17, commission at 21–22 — the youngest officers in the armed forces. Full Permanent Commission from the start.

⚔️ CDS (Combined Defence Services)

Graduates aged 19–25. IMA/INA/AFA for Permanent Commission; OTA for Short Service Commission (women eligible for OTA). The path for those who missed NDA or decided on defence after graduation. Same SSB process, same career ceiling.

The SSB interview — what makes defence selection unique

It is not a test of knowledge

SSB assesses 15 Officer-Like Qualities (OLQs) — effective intelligence, sense of responsibility, social adaptability, morale, and initiative. A person who scored 97% in written but shows poor OLQs will be rejected. A person who scored 55% but shows leadership instinct will be recommended.

Consistency across 5 days

The SSB panel (psychologist, GTO, interviewing officer) evaluates you independently and compares notes on Day 5. Candidates who perform differently in each test — introverted in psychology but assertive in GTO — are flagged as inconsistent. Your real personality, not a performed one, is what the system selects.

Physical fitness signals officer potential

GTO outdoor tasks are physically demanding. Candidates who are visibly unfit during the obstacle course or group tasks create a negative impression regardless of their psychological performance. Physical preparation is a prerequisite, not an extra.

Multiple attempts improve selection rates

Most selected officers passed on their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th SSB attempt. Each attempt builds familiarity with the process and reduces anxiety. Candidates who give up after one failure forgo their highest probability years. Persistence is itself an OLQ.

Prepare for NDA or CDS with a mentor who has cleared SSB

Written exam strategy, SSB OLQ development, and physical fitness planning are all faster to learn from someone who has gone through the process — a mentor can show you exactly what the SSB panel looks for and how to demonstrate it authentically.
