Key Strategy

General Knowledge (Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography)
45% of total written marks (GAT minus English)
- Physics: Class 9–12 NCERT concepts with application
- History: 1857 to Independence, national leaders, key dates
- Geography: Indian rivers, mountain ranges, climate zones
- Current affairs: defence achievements, international relations, sports
Avoid: Ignoring science sections — Physics alone is 100 marks (the highest single-subject weight in GAT)

Frequently Asked Questions
Can girls apply for NDA?
As of the Supreme Court order (2021), women can apply for NDA. However, the implementation has been gradual. Check the latest UPSC notification for eligibility criteria, as the vacancy distribution across branches and gender may differ from historical patterns. The Agniveer scheme also provides separate short-service military entry.
What happens after NDA training?
After 3–4 years at NDA (Khadakwasla) and the respective service academy (IMA/INA/AFA), candidates are commissioned as officers. Army officers join as Lieutenants, Navy as Sub-Lieutenants, and Air Force as Flying Officers. The career then progresses through 30+ years of service.
Is coaching required for NDA?
Not mandatory. Many NDA qualifiers are self-studied. The content is Class 11–12 NCERT level for Mathematics and Science, with standard GK. However, structured coaching helps with exam strategy (negative marking, time allocation) and SSB preparation, which has no equivalent in school curriculum.
What is the difference between NDA and CDS?
NDA is for Class 12 students (age 16.5–19.5) entering as cadets who undergo full training at the academy. CDS (Combined Defence Services) is for graduates (age up to 24 for Army, 19–25 for Navy/Air Force) entering directly as officers after training. NDA requires more physical years and training; CDS is for graduates who missed NDA.
How many SSB attempts are allowed?
There is no official limit on SSB attempts, as long as you continue to qualify the written exam and remain within the age window. The age window for NDA is 16.5–19.5 years, giving most candidates 4–5 written attempts (twice yearly). Each SSB attempt is valuable experience — many officers passed on their 2nd or 3rd SSB attempt.
