45 days before GATE CS is sufficient to move from rank 5,000 to rank 1,000 if used correctly. GATE is predictable — the same 8–10 topic areas appear every year, and 30% of questions are directly similar to previous year questions. The strategy is simple: master the predictable, ace the familiar.

Subject-wise Strategy

Algorithms + Data Structures (30% of marks)

Critical

Time complexity analysis, sorting algorithms, graph algorithms (BFS/DFS/Dijkstra/Bellman-Ford), dynamic programming. Solve all GATE PYQ on these topics — repetition across years is very high.

Avoid: Don't waste time on advanced data structures (B-trees, Fibonacci heaps) — GATE CS tests classic DS only.

DBMS + OS + COA (30% of marks)

High

DBMS: SQL queries, normalization (1NF–BCNF), ER diagrams, transaction management. OS: scheduling algorithms, deadlock, virtual memory, page replacement. COA: pipeline hazards, cache mapping, instruction set.

Theory of Computation + Compiler Design (10% of marks)

Medium

TOC: DFA/NFA constructions, CFL pumping lemma, Turing machines (decidability). Compiler: parsing (LL/LR), code generation basics. These are 10–12 marks — attempt only confident questions in the exam.

Avoid: Don't spend more than 4 days total on TOC + Compiler if you haven't covered them — the marks ROI is lower than Algorithms or DBMS.
