Score vs Rank Explained
Not all exams rank the same way. JEE Main uses percentile, GATE normalizes to a 1000- point scale, NEET uses raw marks. Know exactly what your score means before you plan.
JEE Main
Joint Entrance Examination (Main)
JEE Main uses percentile scores, not raw marks, for the All India Rank (AIR). This means your rank depends not just on your score but on how others performed in the same session — and normalization across sessions adds another layer. Here's how it works.
Scoring: +4 for correct, −1 for wrong (MCQ); +4 for correct, 0 for wrong (Integer type). Total: 300 marks for Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech).

NEET UG
National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate)
NEET UG uses raw marks for ranking — no percentile normalization. One exam, one score, one national rank. But knowing how AIQ seats vs state quota seats work with your rank is where most candidates get confused.
Scoring: +4 for correct, −1 for wrong. Total: 720 marks (180 MCQs — 45 Physics, 45 Chemistry, 90 Biology).

GATE
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering
GATE scores are normalized marks on a scale of 0–100 (not raw marks out of 100). Your Qualifying Marks, GATE Score, and AIR all mean different things. GATE scores are also used directly by PSUs — understanding the score is essential before applying to IITs or PSUs.
Scoring: Multiple correct (2 marks, negative ⅔), Single correct (1–2 marks, negative ⅓ or ⅔), NAT/Numerical (1–2 marks, no negative). Total raw: 100 marks. GATE Score is then normalized.

UPSC CSE
Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination
UPSC CSE has no percentile or rank from Prelims — Prelims is purely qualifying. Your actual rank comes from Mains + Interview marks. The Prelims cut-off varies every year and is announced after the result. Understanding what scores to target across GS Paper 1, Optional, and Essay separates strategic candidates from the rest.
Scoring: Prelims: GS Paper 1 (200 marks, qualifying cut-off) + CSAT (200 marks, qualifying, 33% threshold). Mains: GS I–IV (250×4=1000) + Optional I+II (250×2=500) + Essay (250) + Interview/Personality Test (275). Total Mains+Interview = 2025 marks.

Why each exam ranks differently
JEE Main — Percentile
Two sessions × different question sets → raw marks are not comparable across sessions. Percentile puts everyone on the same scale: what percentage of candidates you beat in your session.
NEET UG — Raw Score
One exam nationwide, one set of questions (with regional language options but same content). No normalization needed — raw marks directly determine your national rank.
GATE — Normalized Score (350–1000)
Paper difficulty varies year to year. GATE Score normalizes your raw marks relative to the top 0.1% performers to ensure a 2019 score of 750 is comparable to a 2024 score of 750.
UPSC CSE — Merit List
Prelims is purely qualifying — marks don't count. Only Mains (written) + Interview marks build the final merit list. This is why UPSC strategy is fundamentally different from other entrance exams.
