State PSC Exam Guides

State Public Service Commissions run India's largest administrative career pipelines. UPPSC and MPSC together recruit 800+ Group A/B officers every year for SDM, Deputy Collector, DSP, and BDO roles — with distinct preparation patterns from UPSC Civil Services.

UPPSC vs MPSC — key differences

UPPSC PCS (Uttar Pradesh)

India's largest state PSC by applicant volume — 4–5 lakh candidates for ~500–700 posts. Hindi-medium advantage is significant: Essay (150M) and General Hindi (150M) together contribute 300 marks. Optional subjects (400M total across 2 papers) make UPPSC closer to UPSC Civil Services pattern. Strong UP-specific content in all GS papers.

MPSC Rajyaseva (Maharashtra)

~1.5 lakh applicants for ~300 posts — higher quality competition. No optional subjects: 6 compulsory GS papers (800M total). Marathi language paper (100M) is mandatory in Mains. Maharashtra History, Geography, and administration are heavily tested. SCERT Maharashtra textbooks are the definitive reference, not NCERT.

State PSC vs UPSC

State PSCs recruit for state services (SDM, BDO, DSP) with postings in that state. UPSC Civil Services (IAS/IPS) recruits for All India Services with national-level postings, more prestige, and faster promotions. State PSC preparation overlaps 50–65% with UPSC GS — many aspirants prepare for both. State PSCs are also faster: 12–18 months for result vs 18–24 months for UPSC.

Prepare for State PSC with a mentor who has cleared one

State PSC preparation requires state-specific knowledge that general UPSC coaching misses — UP History, SCERT Maharashtra textbooks, Hindi or Marathi essay writing. A mentor who has cleared UPPSC or MPSC can show you exactly where state-specific marks are won and lost.
