Public Administration
Highly predictable syllabus, overlaps with GS, and the highest average scorer across state PSC candidates. Best optional for beginners to state PSC.
History
Strong overlap with GS Paper 1. UP History is a bonus for UPPSC specifically. Candidates from humanities backgrounds with strong UP/Indian history preparation score 360+/400.
Sociology
Conceptual, not memorisation-heavy. Strong overlap with GS Paper 2 (Social Justice, Social Issues). Short answer format suits precise writing.
Political Science & International Relations
Large syllabus (political theory + comparative politics + IR). High overlap with GS Paper 2. Suitable only for Political Science graduates or those with prior background.
Geography
Map-based and diagram-heavy. Evaluators reward visual presentation. Good for science graduates with Geography background; challenging for arts/commerce.

What is the difference between UPPSC PCS and UPSC Civil Services?
UPSC Civil Services (IAS) is a central government exam for All India Services posted anywhere in India, with far more prestige and administrative power. UPPSC PCS is a state-level exam for UP-specific services — SDM, DSP, BDO — with postings only in Uttar Pradesh. Both have similar structures (Prelims + Mains + Interview) and overlapping GS content, but UPPSC Mains is in Hindi medium, has an Optional subject system, and includes UP-specific content. Many aspirants prepare for both simultaneously.
Can non-UP domicile candidates apply for UPPSC PCS?
Yes. UPPSC PCS does not require UP domicile for most posts. Any Indian citizen meeting age and qualification criteria can apply. However, domicile is required for some specific posts (certain reserved category seats and local government positions). National candidates who clear UPPSC PCS are posted to UP and must be comfortable with Hindi communication for administrative work.
What is the best optional subject for UPPSC PCS?
