Exam sections — what each tests

Biology (Botany + Zoology)

MCQ100 questions200 marks
Plant physiology (photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration)Plant reproduction and morphologyGenetics and Mendelian inheritanceCell biology (mitosis, meiosis, cell organelles)Animal physiology (digestion, circulation, excretion)Ecology and environmental biologyBiotechnology basics (PCR, GMO, tissue culture)NCERT Class 11–12 Biology chapters
Strategy: ICAR Biology overlaps 80% with NEET Biology. Use NCERT Biology 11–12 as the primary text. Focus on plant physiology (unique to ICAR — more depth than NEET), genetics problems, and biotechnology applications. ICAR often asks applied questions: "Which hormone promotes fruit ripening?" rather than pure definitions. Practice 200+ MCQs weekly from ICAR previous years.

Agriculture

MCQ50 questions100 marks
Soil science (soil types, pH, NPK, organic matter)Crop production (Kharif/Rabi crops, irrigation methods)Horticulture (fruit crops, vegetable cultivation, floriculture)Animal husbandry basics (breeds, feeds, dairy)Agricultural economics (MSP, procurement, schemes)Green Revolution history and varietiesIntegrated Pest Management (IPM)Post-harvest technology and food processing
Strategy: Agriculture section is the differentiator — biology-only students often skip it and lose 100 marks. Get NCERT Agriculture textbooks (Classes 11–12 Vocational) and ICAR extension publications. Memorise India's top crops by state, soil pH requirements for major crops, and current government agricultural schemes (PM-KISAN, PMFBY). This section rewards students with rural or agricultural backgrounds.

Physics

MCQ50 questions100 marks
Mechanics (Newton's laws, work, energy, power)Heat and thermodynamicsElectricity and magnetismOptics (reflection, refraction, lenses)Modern physics (photoelectric effect, nuclear basics)Wave motion and sound
Strategy: ICAR Physics is Class 11–12 NCERT level — no JEE Advanced complexity. Focus on concepts and formula application. 60% of questions come from mechanics and electricity. Use DC Pandey or NCERT exemplar for practice. Physics is often the highest-scoring section for PCM students and lowest for pure PCB — if you're PCB, aim for 120/200 from Biology to compensate.

Chemistry

MCQ50 questions100 marks
Organic chemistry (reactions, functional groups, polymers)Physical chemistry (mole concept, equilibrium, electrochemistry)Inorganic chemistry (periodic table, coordination compounds)Biomolecules (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, enzymes)Environmental chemistryChemistry in everyday life (fertilisers, drugs)
Strategy: Prioritise biomolecules and environmental chemistry — directly relevant to agriculture and frequently tested in ICAR. Organic chemistry reactions from Class 12 NCERT are sufficient. Chemistry in Everyday Life chapter (fertilisers, food preservatives) is must-read. Avoid spending time on complex inorganic mechanisms — ICAR tests recognition not synthesis.

Mathematics (optional — for B.Tech Agri Engg)

MCQ100 questions200 marks
Calculus (differentiation, integration)Algebra (sequences, matrices, determinants)TrigonometryProbability and statisticsCoordinate geometryLinear programming
Strategy: Only required for B.Tech Agricultural Engineering stream. If targeting B.Sc Agriculture or Horticulture, take the Biology paper instead of Maths. For Agri Engineering, ICAR Maths is CBSE Class 12 level — focus on calculus and algebra. Previous year ICAR Maths papers are available from NTA and are the best preparation resource.

Career paths in agriculture and veterinary science

Agricultural Scientist / Researcher

Rs 35,000–56,000/month (ICAR/SAU positions)

ICAR SRF/JRF fellowships (Rs 31,000–35,000/month + HRA) for PhD. Senior Scientist positions at ICAR institutes after PhD pay Rs 60,000–1,20,000/month. Agricultural research is a lifetime career with significant social impact.

Agri-Tech Entrepreneur

Self-funded to Rs 3–5 LPA early stage

India's agri-tech sector received $1.3 billion in funding in 2022. Agri-tech startups (DeHaat, Ninjacart, AgroStar, Crofarm) hire agricultural graduates as domain experts. B.Sc Agriculture + coding skills is a rare and valuable combination for founding teams.

Agricultural Officer (Government)

Rs 30,000–45,000/month

State agricultural departments hire Agricultural Officers (Class II/III gazetted posts via state PSC). Block Development Officers often require agricultural education. Central government: NABARD, FCI, CACP hire agricultural graduates at Rs 35,000–50,000/month starting.

Food Technology / Processing Industry

Rs 25,000–45,000/month

India's food processing sector employs 1.3 crore people and is growing at 11% annually. FMCG companies (Nestle, Britannia, ITC, Amul) hire B.Sc Agriculture/Food Tech graduates in quality control, R&D, and supply chain. MBA after B.Sc Agriculture opens faster growth tracks.

Input Industry (Seeds, Fertilisers, Agrochemicals)

Rs 25,000–40,000/month

Multinational agri-input companies (BASF, Syngenta, Bayer CropScience, Corteva) hire agricultural graduates in technical sales and distribution. Territory managers earn Rs 8–15 LPA after 3–5 years. Strong rural network is a career advantage.

Common mistakes that cost you a seat

Ignoring the Agriculture section entirely — students who treat ICAR like NEET lose 100 marks. Agriculture is often the easiest section for students who prepare it and the differentiator in competitive years.

Not practising on computer-based format — ICAR AIEEA is CBT. Students used to paper exams struggle with on-screen reading and time management. Use NTA mock tests (available free) at least 3–4 weeks before.

Treating ICAR Biology as NEET Biology — while the overlap is 80%, ICAR emphasises applied plant science (crop physiology, tissue culture, biotechnology applications) more than NEET's human physiology focus.

Not checking which paper to appear for — ICAR has separate papers for PCB (Biology + Agri) and PCM (Physics + Maths + Agri) streams. Wrong paper selection wastes preparation months and cannot be corrected after registration.

Overlooking current agricultural schemes and policies — ICAR Agriculture MCQs frequently test awareness of government schemes (MSP fixation, crop insurance, digital agriculture initiatives) that are not in NCERT textbooks.

Frequently asked questions

Can NEET repeaters appear for ICAR AIEEA?

Yes — ICAR AIEEA is open to any Class 12 pass student (no year limit for appearance count). NEET repeaters who have already prepared Biology thoroughly can add the Agriculture section (6–8 weeks of targeted prep) and compete for ICAR seats. The Biology paper overlap with NEET is approximately 80%, making this a smart parallel attempt for medical aspirants considering agriculture as an alternative.

What is the difference between ICAR AIEEA UG and the state-level agriculture entrance?

ICAR AIEEA is a central exam that fills 15% seats (ICAR quota) in all State Agricultural Universities (SAUs) plus 100% seats in centrally-funded institutions (IARI, NDRI, CIFE, etc.). Each SAU also conducts its own state-level entrance for the remaining 85% seats. Appearing in both ICAR AIEEA and your state SAU entrance maximises options. ICAR quota tends to attract toppers from across India, making it more competitive.

Is B.Sc Agriculture a good career choice vs. B.Sc regular science?

B.Sc Agriculture from a top SAU gives stronger domain specificity, government placement preferences, and access to the agri-tech industry ecosystem. Regular B.Sc (Chemistry, Biology) is more flexible for switching fields but has weaker placement in agri-sector roles. If you are certain about food, agriculture, or environment sectors, B.Sc Agriculture from IARI/GBPUAT/TNAU is the stronger choice. If uncertain, wait and choose after Class 12.

What are the hostel and campus facilities at top SAUs?

SAUs typically have large campuses (GBPUAT Pantnagar spans 12,000+ acres). Hostel accommodation is usually available and compulsory for non-local students at many SAUs. Facilities include experimental farms, labs, libraries, and sports complexes. IARI New Delhi is an exception — urban campus, no hostel for UG students, day-scholar model. Check individual SAU websites for current hostel availability before applying.

Does ICAR AIEEA accept OBC/SC/ST reservations?

Yes — ICAR AIEEA follows the central government reservation policy. SC: 15%, ST: 7.5%, OBC-NCL: 27%, EWS: 10% of ICAR quota seats are reserved. Category-wise cutoffs are significantly lower than General category. Reserved category students should appear as both ICAR AIEEA and state entrance for maximum seat options.
