Myth: ECE is just a backup for those who did not get CSE

Reality: ECE leads to roles that CSE cannot access: chip design, RF engineering, automotive embedded systems, and ISRO/DRDO research. These are distinct careers, not consolation prizes. For students interested in hardware, ECE from a top NIT is better than CSE from a mid-tier college.

Myth: ECE students cannot get software jobs

Reality: ECE students who prepare equivalent DSA skills get equivalent software offers. In campus placements, most companies do not differentiate between CSE and ECE for software roles. The gap is in core hardware roles, which ECE exclusively has access to.

Myth: Government jobs are not worth it for ECE graduates

Should I choose CSE or ECE if I am interested in AI and machine learning?

CSE is the more direct path for software-based AI/ML roles (data scientist, ML engineer, NLP engineer). ECE provides better background for hardware AI — chip design for AI accelerators, edge AI, and embedded ML. If you want to work at companies like Nvidia, Qualcomm AI Research, or design AI chips: ECE is actually better. For software ML roles at Google, Amazon, or startups: CSE curriculum is more directly relevant.

Is ECE still relevant with the rise of software?

More relevant than ever. Every physical system — smartphones, EVs, satellites, medical devices, smart homes — needs both hardware (ECE) and software (CSE). India's semiconductor ambitions and the EV transition are creating significant demand for ECE-trained engineers. The demand for pure ECE skills (VLSI, RF, embedded) has never been higher — the entry barrier is just higher (often requires MTech for core roles).

What is the scope of ECE in government jobs?

Excellent. GATE ECE qualifies you for BHEL, BEL, ECIL, BSNL, HAL, and hundreds of state PSUs. DRDO and ISRO recruit directly from IIT ECE and hire MTech students for research roles. Indian Railways also recruits through GATE. Government jobs in ECE offer the same benefits as any government job — stability, pension, and good CTC — without the reputation loss that service-company software jobs sometimes carry.
