Myth: Mechanical engineering has no future because of automation
Reality: Automation replaces specific tasks, not engineers. ME engineers design the automation systems, maintain them, and improve them. Robotics, additive manufacturing, and simulation (all ME-adjacent fields) are growing. The ME roles being automated are low-skill manufacturing jobs — not design, simulation, or systems engineering.
Myth: ME graduates cannot get into IT companies
Reality: Many ME graduates transition to software roles — but it requires deliberate programming skill development outside the ME curriculum. Unlike CSE and ECE, ME curriculum does not include data structures or algorithms. ME students who self-learn programming and prepare DSA can get software offers, but it requires more additional effort than CSE/ECE students need.
Myth: Government jobs for ME are not prestigious
Reality: ONGC and IOCL engineers earn ₹9–15 LPA at the entry level with housing, medical, and pension — total compensation far exceeding the nominal salary. Engineers at BHEL and NTPC can reach ₹25–35 LPA at senior levels with stable career progression. PSU careers have lower peak ceilings than private sector but much higher floors.

Should I choose CSE over ME if I have the option?
It depends on your interest, not salary alone. If you are genuinely interested in machines, manufacturing, automotive, or aerospace: ME is the right choice. If you have strong interest in software, systems, and computing: CSE. Choosing CSE purely for salary when ME interests you more leads to disengagement by the 3rd year and worse career outcomes than an engaged ME student. Interest is the strongest predictor of outcome.
Is ME good for girls?
Historically underrepresented (8–12% women in ME programs), but the field itself has no gender barrier. Automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing companies actively recruit women engineers. The more relevant question is whether the interest and work style suit you — ME involves significant lab work, shop floor exposure, and physical systems — which appeals to some and not others, regardless of gender.
How important is GATE for Mechanical engineers?
