Counselling Rounds
Round 1
All ~50,000 seats allocatedBroadest choice filling — fill 25+ choices regardless of where you think you will get allotted
Round 2
Vacated + upgraded seats from Round 1Upgrade opportunity — if you accepted a lower preference, Round 2 may give you a better college
Round 3–5
Progressive reduction in vacant seatsFloating candidates from previous rounds get upgraded; new allotments for fresh vacancies
Round 6 (Final)
Last allotment round — no upgrades after thisIf you have an allotment from Round 5, retain it; fresh allotment is unlikely unless you withdrew
Step-by-Step Counselling Process
JoSAA Registration
Typically within 5 days of JEE Advanced resultRegister on josaa.nic.in with your JEE Main/Advanced application number. Do this the moment registration opens — do not wait.
Choice Filling
5–7 days window; revise until the portal closesFill at least 25 choices (institute + branch combinations), ordered strictly by preference. Treat this as the most important exam of your counselling process — wrong ordering costs seats.
Round 1 Allotment
24–48 hours to respondJoSAA releases your allotment. Options: Accept + Withdraw (forfeit higher choices), Accept + Freeze (only want this seat), or Accept + Float (keep choices above active, accept upgrade if available).
Document Verification & Fee Payment
Within 48 hours of allotmentUpload documents: 10th/12th marksheets, JEE scorecard, category certificate, photo. Pay seat acceptance fee online. Missing documents = seat cancellation.
Rounds 2–6 Upgrades
After each round resultIf you chose "Float", JoSAA automatically upgrades you to a better allotment (from your choice list) in subsequent rounds. You can change to Freeze at any point.
Physical Reporting
As per institute schedule after Round 6Report to your allotted institute in the final round with original documents. Failure to report = seat cancelled, application closed for JoSAA.
Important Dates (Approximate)
Dates are approximate based on previous years. Confirm on josaa.nic.in.
Do These
- Fill ALL 25 choices even if you think you will get your top preference — JoSAA gives you the highest preference possible
- Order choices strictly by your true preference, not by "what you think you will get"
- Accept + Float in every round unless you are 100% satisfied with the allotment
- Keep all documents (original + photocopies) ready before Round 1 allotment
- Monitor your email and josaa.nic.in every day during counselling — deadlines are strict
- If eligible for both JEE Main and JEE Advanced, register for JoSAA (covers both)
Avoid These
- Do not fill fewer than 10 choices — every unfilled choice is a seat you are giving up
- Do not choose Freeze unless you are genuinely satisfied with your current allotment
- Do not pay the fee and then not report — you lose the fee and the seat
- Do not rely on third-party college predictors as absolute truth — use them for rough estimates only
- Do not skip CSAB rounds if you did not get a seat in JoSAA — CSAB fills remaining vacancies
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between JoSAA Freeze, Float, and Slide?
Freeze: keep your current allotment, no upgrades. Float: upgrade to any higher-preference choice if available. Slide: upgrade only within the same institute. Choose Float unless you are satisfied.
Can I change my choices after Round 1?
No — choices are locked after the choice-filling window closes. You can only change between Freeze/Float/Slide options after each round allotment.
What happens if I do not respond to a round allotment?
Your allotment is cancelled and you are effectively withdrawn from JoSAA. Always respond within the deadline.
Should I fill NIT choices even if I am targeting IITs?
Yes — always include NITs as backup choices below your IIT preferences. JoSAA gives your highest possible preference, so filling NITs never hurts your IIT chances.
