The GRE General Test is the most widely accepted graduate admission test globally — required by nearly all US MS programs (Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, Life Sciences) and accepted as a GMAT alternative by top MBA programs (HBS, Wharton, Yale SOM, MIT Sloan). The 260–340 scale tests Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing — offering Indian aspirants a single test for both Masters and MBA applications.

Indian aspirant context — what actually matters
For MBA aspirants
ISB Hyderabad (GMAT preferred), IIM Ahmedabad PGPX, IIM Calcutta PGPEX — all primarily GMAT. GMAT 710+ puts you in the competitive pool. GRE is an alternative but ISB interviewers are more familiar with GMAT benchmarks. Work experience quality matters as much as score.
For US MS aspirants
GRE is the standard for all US MS programs — CS, ECE, Data Science, Economics, MFin. Most US engineering schools have not adopted GMAT. GRE Quant 168+ is the unspoken minimum for MIT/Stanford CS. Verbal 158+ differentiates competitive Indian applicants in research-track programs.
For UK/Europe aspirants
LBS, INSEAD, HEC prefer GMAT for MBA. UK MSc programs (LSE Finance, Oxford MFin, Imperial MSc) accept GRE or GMAT depending on program. ETH Zurich and many continental European universities do not require standardised tests for engineering Masters. Check programme-specific requirements before committing to a test.
