US Top-10 MBA (2-year)

IIM 1-Year / Executive MBA
690+ (IIM Ahmedabad PGPX, IIM Bangalore EPGP, IIM Calcutta PGPEX)India's most cost-effective elite MBA for experienced professionals; GMAT accepted alongside CAT; requires 5–10 years work experience; graduates return to Indian corporate market; fee ₹25–35 lakh

Common mistakes that cost 30–60 points
Preparing for old GMAT — GMAT Focus Edition (2023) has no AWA section, 3 sections only, shorter duration, and new Data Insights question types; old GMAT prep books (pre-2022) cover AWA preparation that is now irrelevant; use GMAT Focus-specific official materials
Underestimating Verbal for Indian engineers — most Indian engineering aspirants score Quant 80+/90 but Verbal 65–72/90; a Verbal score below 70/90 severely limits total score; Verbal improvement requires sustained effort (3+ months) not last-minute cramming
Using only third-party materials without Official Guide practice — GMAT questions have very specific phrasing and reasoning patterns; third-party materials (Kaplan, Princeton Review) don't fully replicate official difficulty; at least 50% of practice should come from Official GMAT sources
Not keeping an error log — GMAT preparation without systematic error tracking leads to repeating the same mistakes; categorise every error (e.g., "I confuse Data Sufficiency Statement 1+2 combined reasoning") and review patterns weekly
Scheduling exam before reaching target score in practice — GMAT exam fee (~₹23,000) and limited attempts make premature test-taking costly; only schedule when 2 consecutive official practice mocks hit your target
Ignoring Data Insights as "new and unfamiliar" — Data Insights is the most coachable section of GMAT Focus; Data Sufficiency has a fixed set of reasoning patterns that become predictable with practice; candidates who avoid it leave 3–5 points of total score on the table
Frequently asked questions
Is GMAT or GRE better for ISB Hyderabad?
ISB accepts both GMAT and GRE, but GMAT is preferred and the overwhelming majority of ISB applicants submit GMAT scores. The ISB class of 2025 had a median GMAT of ~710. ISB's admissions team is experienced in evaluating GMAT and may have less clarity on GRE score comparison. If you're specifically targeting ISB and IIM programs, GMAT is recommended. If you're targeting both US Masters and ISB, GRE is more efficient (accepted by both).
What GMAT score is needed for a 700 total?
In GMAT Focus Edition, a 700 total (on 205–805 scale) requires roughly 78–80/90 in Quant, 72–75/90 in Verbal, and 75–78/90 in Data Insights. All three sections contribute equally to the total score. A sectional imbalance (e.g., Quant 88 + Verbal 68) produces a lower total than balanced sections (80+75+75). Indian applicants typically find Quant easier — the bottleneck is usually Verbal.
How long does GMAT preparation take?
The average GMAT preparation time is 3–6 months for a starting score of 550–600, targeting 700+. Candidates with strong math backgrounds (engineers, finance professionals) who score 650+ on their first diagnostic can often reach 700+ in 8–12 weeks. Candidates starting below 550 may need 5–6 months. All candidates need dedicated Verbal preparation regardless of starting score — Verbal improvement is slower than Quant improvement.
Can I cancel and retake GMAT if my score is low?
Yes. GMAT allows score cancellation at the test centre immediately after the exam (before seeing results). You can also cancel online within 72 hours. Cancelled scores are not reported to schools. You may retake GMAT after a 16-day waiting period (minimum). With 5 attempts per 12 months and 8 lifetime attempts, most applicants have adequate retake flexibility. Most schools look at your highest score (some consider all scores).
