SOP writing principles

Research

Read the actual papers of 2–3 faculty members before writing. Your SOP should reference a specific result or method from their work — not just the lab name.

Drafting

Write 5 different opening sentences and keep only the most specific one. The opener that names a project, result, or moment beats any abstract passion statement.

Technical depth

Use field-specific terminology correctly — admissions committees include faculty reviewers. Vague phrases like "cutting-edge technology" or "state of the art" are red flags. Name algorithms, frameworks, and results precisely.

Length discipline

Most programs specify 500–1000 words. At 600 words, every sentence must earn its place. If a sentence does not add evidence of research ability or program fit, delete it.

Revision

Read your SOP aloud. Every sentence that sounds like marketing copy — rather than a specific technical story — is a sentence to rewrite. Ask: would a professor reading this learn something specific about how I think?
