Cornell Notes
A structured note-taking system that builds in review and synthesis from the start.
The Cornell Notes system divides your note page into three sections: a narrow left column (cues), a wide right column (notes), and a bottom section (summary). During class or study, you take notes in the right column. Afterwards, you write questions or keywords in the left column. The bottom section synthesises the key takeaway of the entire page.

How to apply it — step by step

Draw a vertical line 6cm from the left edge. Draw a horizontal line 5cm from the bottom.

During study: take standard notes in the right (wider) column.

Within 24 hours: review your notes and write keywords or questions in the left column.

Cover the right column and use the left column cues to test your recall.

Write a 2–3 sentence summary at the bottom — what was the most important point?

Review the left column (cues only) at spaced intervals to test retention.
The science behind it
Cornell Notes work because they force active processing at three stages: during note-taking, during cue formulation, and during summary writing. Each stage is a form of elaborative encoding — connecting new information to prior knowledge rather than passively copying it.
Most common mistake
Filling in the cue column immediately after taking notes, before the information has settled. Wait 24 hours — the delay means formulating cues requires actual retrieval, not just looking at what you wrote and paraphrasing it.
Exam-specific application
For UPSC GS: use the summary section to link topics to their exam relevance (e.g., "Polity: Article 368 links to Basic Structure Doctrine — frequent Prelims question"). For CAT RC: note the passage structure in the left column and key arguments in the right.
