Spaced Repetition

The single most evidence-backed study method. Review information at expanding intervals.

Spaced repetition exploits the "spacing effect" — the cognitive phenomenon where information is better retained when study sessions are spread over time rather than crammed in one go. Instead of reviewing material every day, you review it just before you are about to forget it, gradually extending the gaps between reviews.

Time investment

20–30 min/day (consistent)

How to apply it — step by step

  1. 1

Identify the concepts, formulas, or vocabulary you need to memorize.

  2. 2

Create flashcards — one concept per card (front: question, back: answer/explanation).

  3. 3

Study the deck and mark cards as Easy, Medium, or Hard after each review.

  4. 4

Hard cards come back tomorrow; Medium cards in 3 days; Easy cards in 7+ days.

  5. 5

Use tools like Anki or SkillMonster's Flashcard mode to automate the scheduling.

  6. 6

Never skip a review session — consistency matters more than session length.

The science behind it

Research by Ebbinghaus (1885) and confirmed by hundreds of subsequent studies shows that spaced review can reduce forgetting by 50–80% compared to massed practice (cramming). The retrieval attempt itself — not just re-reading — is what drives long-term retention.

Most common mistake

Using spaced repetition only for isolated facts (dates, formulas) without building conceptual understanding first. Spaced repetition works on top of understanding — not as a replacement for it.

Exam-specific application

For JEE and NEET, use spaced repetition for formulae, reaction mechanisms, and constants. For UPSC, use it for dates, Acts, Articles of the Constitution, and current affairs facts. For IELTS, use it for vocabulary bands.
