Interleaved Practice

Mixing topics feels harder but produces dramatically better results than blocked practice.

Interleaved practice is the opposite of "blocked" practice (doing all of topic A, then all of topic B). Instead, you mix different topics or problem types within a single study session. While it feels more difficult and less productive in the moment, research consistently shows it leads to significantly better long-term retention and application.

How to apply it — step by step

  1. 1

Identify 3–4 topics you need to practice (e.g., Integration, Differential Equations, Vectors).

  2. 2

Instead of doing 20 integration problems then 20 differentiation problems, mix them.

  3. 3

Set up your practice set: 2 integration, 2 diff equations, 2 vectors, repeat.

  4. 4

For each problem, identify which technique applies before solving — this is the key skill.

  5. 5

Check your work after each problem, not after the whole set.

  6. 6

Track your error rate per topic over time — interleaving makes the gaps visible.

The science behind it

A study by Rohrer, Dedrick & Burgess (2014) found that students who practiced interleaved material scored 215% better on a final test than students who used blocked practice — even though blocked practice felt more productive during the session. The difficulty of discriminating between problem types is itself a learning mechanism.

Most common mistake

Abandoning interleaving because it "feels like you're not learning anything." This feeling is a sign it is working — your brain is working harder on discrimination between problem types, which is exactly what exams require.

Exam-specific application

JEE Mathematics: mix Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, and Algebra problems in one session. NEET: mix Genetics, Ecology, and Physiology questions. CAT: mix VARC, DILR, and QA questions in a single timed set.
