Pomodoro Technique

Work in focused 25-minute sprints. Your concentration is finite — manage it deliberately.

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo. It uses a timer to break work into intervals of focused work (typically 25 minutes), separated by short breaks (5 minutes). After four intervals, a longer break (15–30 minutes) is taken. The goal is to manage the finite resource of focused attention.

How to apply it — step by step

  1. 1

Choose a specific task (e.g., "Solve 10 integration problems from Chapter 7").

  2. 2

Set a timer for 25 minutes. No phone, no notifications, no exceptions.

  3. 3

Work on only that task until the timer rings.

  4. 4

Take a 5-minute break — stand up, move, drink water. No screens.

  5. 5

Repeat. After 4 Pomodoros (2 hours of work), take a 20–30 minute break.

  6. 6

Track your Pomodoros daily — it becomes a productivity gauge.

The science behind it

Sustained attention is physiologically limited. Studies on ultradian rhythms suggest natural attention cycles of approximately 90 minutes, with natural dips in concentration. Structured work-break cycles prevent the cognitive fatigue that makes extended "study sessions" less effective than they appear.

Most common mistake

Breaking the 25-minute interval for "just one quick thing." The integrity of the interval is the technique — once interrupted, the concentration reset effect is lost. Record interruptions and deal with them in the next break.

Exam-specific application

For JEE mock exams: practice Pomodoro-style timed question solving to build the concentration needed for 3-hour papers. For UPSC essay writing: use 2 Pomodoros for outline + 4 Pomodoros for writing. For IELTS: simulate test conditions during Pomodoro sessions.
