JEE Main Physics is notorious for calculation-heavy questions with subtle conceptual traps. Unlike Chemistry and Mathematics, Physics problems require both conceptual clarity AND fast numerical computation under exam conditions.

Preparation Strategies

Master concepts before formulas

Every JEE Physics formula is derived from 2–3 fundamental concepts. Understand the derivation — you can reconstruct any formula in the exam even if you forget it.

Dimensional analysis as a sanity check

Before solving, write down the expected dimensions of your answer. If your final answer has wrong dimensions, you made an algebraic error — catch it in 5 seconds instead of 2 minutes.

Draw free body diagrams for every Mechanics problem

FBDs are non-negotiable — 80% of Mechanics errors come from not drawing FBDs. No exception for 'simple' problems.

Treat Modern Physics as scoring, not scary

Modern Physics has predictable formulas (de Broglie, photoelectric, decay laws) and very little calculation. 4–5 questions in every JEE Main paper — should be near-100% scored.

Practice electricity as a circuit analysis subject

Most JEE Electricity problems are either Kirchhoff's Laws, RC/RL circuits, or field superposition. Identify the type first — then apply the template.

Time Physics at 50–55 minutes in the exam

Physics takes longest per question. If you're at 60 minutes, stop regardless of where you are and move to Chemistry. Uncapped Physics burns your Mathematics time.

Common Weak Areas & Fixes

Rotational Mechanics (moment of inertia, angular momentum)

Build a personal formula sheet for every standard body (disk, rod, sphere, ring) — these appear in 2–3 questions every paper. Only 6 shapes to memorise.

Wave Optics (interference, diffraction)

YDSE (Young's Double Slit Experiment) is the only calculation in wave optics. The rest is conceptual. Learn the 3 YDSE formulas: fringe width, path difference, condition for maxima/minima.

Electromagnetic Induction

Use Lenz's law first (direction of induced current), then use Faraday's for magnitude. Students who skip Lenz's law get the direction wrong 40% of the time.

Thermodynamics (entropy, processes)

Map each thermodynamic process (isothermal, adiabatic, isobaric, isochoric) to one P-V diagram shape. All thermodynamics JEE questions are about reading P-V diagrams correctly.
